Fourth-generation roadster goes on sale this summer

Mazda has announced the starting price for the fourth-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which has been totally redesigned for the new model year. The roadster is slated to go on sale this summer, and in entry-level Sport trim it starts at $25,735 when coupled with a six-speed manual transmission.

The fourth-generation roadster made its public debut in September of 2014, promising to return to it roots as a lightweight sports car while paying attention to the needs of drivers in the modern era. The 2016 model is lower but also wider, and in North American specification it draws its power from a Skyactiv 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. This is actually a slight decrease in horsepower from the outgoing model, which was good for 167 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque, but more than the powerplant slated for Europe: a 1.5-liter direct-injected gasoline producing 129 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque.

"The three trim levels available "Sport, Club and Grand Touring" are tailored for three very different types of customers, broadening the MX-5's appeal," said Rod McLaughlin, MX-5 vehicle line manager, MNAO. "The Sport model is for those desiring a pure, lightweight, unadulterated wind-in-the-hair driving experience. MX-5 Club is for those seeking a more aggressive appearance and driving experience and Grand Touring models are for loyal MX-5 owners who seek premium amenities and a driving experience that only MX-5 can deliver."

Mazda will release pricing and option details for the other trim levels in the near future, closer to the start of sales.
