Mazda North American Operations is recalling about 575,381 vehicles in the U.S., including the 2016 Mazda CX-3 SUV, because the rear hatch may drop suddenly and cause injuries.
Other vehicles included in the recall are the 2013-'16 Mazda CX-5, 2012-'15 Mazda 5 and 2010-'13 Mazda 3.
Mazda said insufficient corrosion protective coating was applied to the ends of the external cylinders on the rear hatch/liftgate gas-stay dampers.
"If water containing road salt enters, it can cause corrosion," Mazda said in a statement. "Over time, increased corrosion may eventually cause it to break as the rear hatch or liftgate is opened.
"The rear hatch or liftgate may drop suddenly and/or the broken parts may hit the customer, causing injury."
There are no reports of accidents or injuries linked to the recall.
Mazda dealers will replace the lift supports. A date has not been specified for the recall. Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.
